Program: stages, pop-up shops, outdoor exhibition
The design for the Xinghai Square Pop-up introduces a dynamic framework with a linear space composed of three structural levels for a three-month bazaar event in Dalian’s largest urban plaza. Scaffolding was first used to create several large public spaces, including a theater, ceremonial stage, axial plaza, and open-air exhibition area. These elements not only define the flat square but also bring a sense of community energy to the commercial activities. The main shopping area is formed by repurposed shipping containers for the store spaces, with a sheltered zone constructed from custom aluminum profiles in a staggered yet cohesive arrangement. Additionally, islands of wooden pallets and planter boxes were introduced, connecting the man-made structures with the plaza’s original green space, providing areas for rest and relaxation.
