Smoking Area by Sirui Zhang

2019-2020, steel, plastic, exhaust fan, 85 cm in diameter, 210 cm in height.

Location: Terrace Garden, 8th Floor, Yida Building, Guangzhou, Fei Art Museum, “First Boundless Architecture Season,” December 7, 2019 – May 31, 2020.

Yida Building only has one designated outdoor smoking area, and due to insufficient elevator capacity, smoking in the office building has become somewhat inconvenient. In some fire stairwells, “No Smoking” signs can still be found, indicating that people are secretly smoking in those areas. This gap between regulations and actual needs has led to a conflict between smokers and non-smokers. This artwork attempts to create a space on even-numbered floor terraces where both smokers and non-smokers can coexist peacefully. However, at the same time, smokers—who usually exert pressure on others in their daily routines—are now confined to a space full of pressure themselves, reversing the roles of exerting and experiencing pressure.
